History of CFS
Computers for Schools (CFS), co-founded in 1993 by Industry Canada and the Telecom Pioneers, refurbishes computers and related equipment donated by governments and businesses. These computers are distributed across Canada to schools, libraries and registered not-for-profit learning organizations.
CFS celebrated the delivery of our 1,000,000th http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/ic1.nsf/eng/05509.html computer at York Street Public School in Ottawa, ON on April 26 with the Honourable Tony Clement.
Computers for Schools is the largest computer refurbishing program in North America, and the fifth largest in the world. It is the only major refurbisher that is not-for-profit.
CFS distributes over 80,000 refurbished computers each year across Canada. This is enough to meet a quarter of the computer needs of Canadian schools and provide over 10,000 each year to libraries, community access sites and not-for-profit organizations. Approximately 1000 youth receive technical work experience in over 50 CFS refurbishing centres each year.
By delivering a quality reuse program, CFS doubles the life span of computers through the transfer and refurbishment of equipment from business to schools. This provides many environmental savings including:
CFS is delivered in each province and territory by non-profit organizations, each with their own unique partnership and governance structures. CFS operates in cooperation with federal, provincial and territorial governments, the public school system, and the private and voluntary sectors. Direction, policy setting and funding is provided by Industry Canada.
